National Council on Sports commits to April date for Sports Festival

National Council on Sports commits to April date for Sports Festival.

-FG considers financial support

The Edo 2020 National  Sports Festival  earlier  scheduled  to hold  from February 14th- 28th has been  postponed  till April. This decision was reached after the emergency meeting of the National Council on Sports convened by the HM youth and sports who is the chairman of council.

In attendance were Commisioners

Of Youth and Sports from the states of the federation and Directors of Sports. The Deputy Governor of Edo state was also in attendance.

This recent postponement was occasioned by the second wave of the pandemic and the paucity of funds. The Edo Govt had requested for financial support due to the cost implications it suffered arising from the postponement.

The accommodation prepared at the University of Benin was no longer available for the Atheletes because students had resumed.

Rising from the meeting  of the National Council  on Sports on Monday, Council resolved  that it was   best to shift  the Festival  to a later date due to financial challenges   raised by the host state,  accommodation problems  at the University  of Benin due to the resumption  of academic activities  which would affect the camping of atheletes.

According  to the resolution  of the council, the Federal Government,  Edo state and the council on Sports  agreed that the Festival will  now hold in April since the earlier February  date was no longer feasible.

According to the chairman of Council and Minister of Youth and sports Development Mr *Sunday Dare* "We have seen the Sports Festival postponed three times,' as we speak now most of us should have arrived Edo state getting ready for February 14, Sunday to start the Edo 2020 Sports Festival. But flowing from our last meeting a few things came up. There was an undertone that the postponements have occasioned some financial difficulties and strains on the host state, and I dare say even on our part as the Ministry the postponements have also occasioned some financial difficulties.  On the strength of this similar experience myself, His Excellency the Governor and also Deputy Governor have bounced Ideas, the conversation, back and forth. Of course, when December came, we know that almost everything stopped but it was agreed that it was important to approach the Federal Government for financial support. I'm  glad to report that the Federal Government  is favourably disposed to assisting Edo State to host the  Festival. In the next few day, we hope to  push through the document  through the Ministry  of Finance to get the financial  support to get the Festival  on track. The February  14th date was not cast in stone as we wanted to avoid another postponement. But we must agree that the  February  14th date is no longer  feasible."

" The importance  of the Festival  cannot be  over emphasized.  The idea of not holding the Festival  should be thrown  out completely . It is an Olympics  year, it would help shape the atheletes  for the Olympics."

On his part. The Chairman of the Main Organizing Committee  and Edo State Deputy Governor  Comrade Philip Shuaibu said “I agree the Festival  should hold before the Olympics to get our athletes  fit and to secure points they require for the Olympics. Every postponement goes with a cost, but we are totally  committed  to hosting the festival. We are very expectant  of the support of the Federal Government  to make the Festival  a reality"

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured members of the Youth Wing of the ruling APC as well other  Nigerian youths  of  his continued support through the creation  of greater opportunities to make them attain their potentials.

Speaking at the State House, Abuja  on Thursday when  they were held in audience at  a virtual meeting by the Minister  of Youth and sports Development Mr. *Sunday Dare* the President  said "I am delighted to be part of this meeting today, not only on your commitment to strengthen our party and its progressive ideologies, but more importantly, your role in the social sphere, body polity, politics and governance of our dear country. Having started my participation in the governance of this country at a young age myself, I know the energy, versatility and vibrancy that youth can bring into public service. This is why I take every issue related to young people very seriously and try as much as possible to engage them by having constant conversations to gain from their youthful and inspiring insights into issues of today. I have followed with keen interest the efforts of many of you in your bid to grow our party, the APC, into a strong and long lasting platform that would sustain progressive governance in Nigeria. Taking issues concerning our party seriously is commendable and shows your forward thinking"

On the challenges faced by the Youth,  he said efforts were being made to tackle them headlong; “I am also aware of the daily toils and sacrifices many of our online warriors make on social media to defend and promote the party and government. I appreciate you deeply and I am committed to making sure everyone appreciates your work as well..As young people I am sure you know your future is closely tied to the progress that leaders who emerge through the political parties are able to deliver. This is the major reason I vehemently supported and advocated for the APC's membership registration and revalidation, and that whoever among you seek to participate honestly in uplifting this country through the instrumentalities of party politics is able to do so. I was in Daura to revalidate my membership and I encourage you all to do same. My belief and firm commitment is that politics is a game of numbers, and political power truly belongs to the people. Parties are built from the ground up. So I envisage a party that we can have transparent electoral contests, drive policies and programmes that are pro people, and most importantly, have the members determine who represents them not some leaders somewhere".

On the on going party registration, he said "Tell your colleagues to go back to their constituencies and join in party registration, attend party meetings, pay your dues, make contributions and bring your youthful energy and zeal to bear on the development of the party right from the unit and ward level up to the National. If you want to see something different you have to be willing to do something different."

On the effect of covid-19  on the economy,  he affirmed " Let me also acknowledge the suffering and disruptions caused by COVID-19. The pandemic has slowed down economic growth across the world, not just in Nigeria, thus proving that no one country or economy is immune to the shocks of life. In fact, Nigeria is lucky not to have been too badly hit by the pandemic because we took early precautions, coupled with our good fortune of having a predominantly young population, a demographic advantage I believe we need to harness more deliberately.Young people owe this country the responsibility to deploy their energy and creativity in every field — health, science, education, sports, agriculture, etc. — and bring up innovations that would be in tandem with the changing dynamics of the world."

He concluded by assuring  them of more robust engagements "While I will be looking forward to a more robust engagement with young people across the country, I wish to emphasize to you with all that is in me, you have a major supporter. I will offer you my full support to grow in politics, public service, entertainment, entrepreneurship and many other sectors, because I know that the future we envisage as a country cannot happen without our youth. In the days ahead, I will be engaging with the Minister for Youth; the National Youth Leader of the party and others to fine-tune continuous and deliberate strategy on how to better drive a more robust youth inclusion and participation in different sectors. I have listened to the grievances of the youth and taken some remedial actions last year. But I acknowledge the need to do a lot more. Consequently, I will be setting up a small committee made up largely of young people to engage with their peers, air their views and come up with better ways to identify and address challenges and find durable solutions.t is my hope that by combining the wisdom and experience of the older generation with the foresight and energy of the young, we shall collectively drive this country to greater heights".

774k Jobs: Youth Minister hails President Buhari’s commitment to youth development

*774k Jobs: Youth Minister hails President Buhari’s commitment to youth development*

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for approving the 774,000 jobs under the Special Public Works Programme (SPWP) noting that flag-off of the project on Tuesday signposts a Government committed to the upliftment and improvement of the lives of the mass of Nigeria’s most productive population, which is the youth.

In his speech at the start-off of the Special Public Works Programme in Ibadan, Oyo State, Mr Dare noted the programme, designed along other similar ones being implemented by more developed nations, is a validation that President Buhari’s Government has focus and purpose and is a government that is bold in its actions and committed to programmes that will deal with socio-economic problems.

The Minister, who was represented by the Zonal Coordinator of the Ministry, Mr Ajao Olufemi, stated that, “Across the nation, beginning today, 774,000 Nigerian youth mostly unskilled and semi -skilled, will participate in this Special Public Works Programme (SPWP) for 3 months. The engagement of this large group by the Federal Government in productive ventures, I believe, is the beginning of a more robust engagement of our youth in national development.

“Undoubtedly, this novel initiative joins a slew of numerous youth programmes already put in place by the Buhari-led administration. This administration’s commitment to youth engagement and development is unparalleled. Yet, it intends to do more partnering with the private sector in a bid to increase the number of the youth population provided with life-changing opportunities.

“We have received the greatest assurances from Mr President, who only a few days ago, on January 1st said this,

“Our young people are our most valuable natural resource, at home and abroad. Their ingenuity, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit is evident to all. Many of our young people are excelling in various spheres of life including sports, entertainment, information and communication technology, commerce and are globally recognized as achievers. As a Government, we are committed to actively engaging with the creative energies of our young people. In this regard, we will partner with the legislature to develop an enabling environment to turn their passions into ideas that can be supported, groomed and scaled across regions. This will create vast opportunities in fintech, agriculture, business process startups and in the entertainment industry.””

Mr. Dare asserted that Nigerian youth could take Mr. President’s commitment to the bank and that the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development (FMYSD), aligns and commit itself fully to the youth of the country.

According to him, “Our commitment is evidently emphasized by the FMYSD-driven Nigerian Youth Investment Fund (NYIF), which has successfully completed its pilot disbursement of loans totaling N165,700,000.00 to 239 beneficiaries ahead of the processing of the over 3,000,000 applications so far received.

“The Fund, approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on July 22, 2020, is being implemented in partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning (FMFBNP) and disbursed through the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) Microfinance Bank (NMFB).

“For all that has been mentioned above, the youth and the good people of Oyo State thank Mr. President for this great opportunity that the Special Public Works Programme (SPWP) provides and look forward to benefiting from similar laudable national projects,” he said.

239 Beneficiaries Get N166 Million From FG

The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development driven Nigeria Youth Investment Fund (NYIF) has successfully completed its pilot disbursement of loans totaling N165,700,000.00 to 239 beneficiaries ahead of the processing of the over three million applications so far received.

The Fund, approved by the Federal Executive Council on July 22, 2020, is being implemented in partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria, Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning and disbursed through the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) Microfinance Bank – NMFB.

Application data showed that a total of 3,120,107 have registered for the NYIF Pre-Assessment/Training to benefit from the N75 billion three-year financing for youth owned businesses and ideas.

Of the about 1000 processed as part of the pilot disbursement, a total of 94 were disqualified from the NYIF loan after training, as a result of existing COVID 19 or AGSMEIS loan that they have benefitted from.

A total of 500 applicants have been invited by NMFB to apply for the NYIF loan after training and successful due process check while loan application by the applicants is at various times and the application is open until the applicants are able to provide all the requirements and complete the process.

Out of he 500 invited for the loan application, only a total of 393 have completed the loan application process and applied for the loan out of which a total of 293 applied early and their loan was processed and sent to CBN for approval at a total sum of N191, 700.000.00.

On approval by CBN, a total of 239 have been successfully disbursed at a total sum of N165,700,000.00.

Explanation provided to the Ministry by NMFB gave reason for the disbursement to only 239, out of 293, as being because transfer failed to the account numbers of the affected applicants, due to the type of their account that does not receive deposit beyond a certain sum and system failure. These will be contacted and the process repeated.

The relatively low number of trained beneficiaries compared to the number of applications was as a result of the non-availability of funds as there was no budgetary provision for the exercise in the year 2020, which compelled the Ministry to provide the training within its existing capacity instead of using Entrepreneurship Development Institutes (EDIs).

The Ministry will scale up the number of applicants being trained once it onboards EDIs now that it has funds for training in the 2021 budget. The increased number of training will begin as soon as late January.

However, the process announced by the Ministry showed that applicants that have been screened for basic KYC and confirmed as not presently benefitting from similar initiatives from government would be invited to submit business proposals, following which those whose proposals meet the requirements for the loans would be selected for the free training and then be given the loans ranging from N250,000 for individuals to N3,000,000.00 for registered businesses.

FG Imposes New COVID-19 Restrictions, Shuts Down Nightclubs, Recreational Centres

*BREAKING: FG Imposes New COVID-19 Restrictions, Shuts Down Nightclubs, Recreational Centres*

The Federal Government has imposed new restrictions amid the rising cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in various parts of the country. Mr Boss Mustapha, who is the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, announced this on Monday at the briefing of the task force in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The new restrictions include the closure of all bars, nightclubs, pubs and event centres, as well as recreational venues in all states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Similarly, all informal and formal festivity events, including weddings, conferences, congresses, office parties, concerts, seminars, sporting activities, end of year events, have been restricted to not more than 50 people.

The government also limited all gatherings linked to religious events to less than 50 per cent of the capacity of the facility of use which physical distancing and use of face masks should be strictly enforced.

By *_Engr. Chika Chukwumerije_* _OLY, MNSE_

Two major political elections were held in Ondo & Edo; the National Festival of Arts & Culture was held in Plateau; Churches & Mosques across the nation threw open their gates; NYSC camps are open; millions of children have flooded back into the classrooms to continue their education; and millions of businesses have welcomed back their employees.

Yet, the 2020 National Sports Festival is to be purportedly postponed due to COVID-19 concerns.

Prior to the holding of these other events, ‘concerns’ were raised about the impact of COVID-19, but the events were ultimately allowed to hold, despite the fact that the ‘crowd size and crowd proximity’ involved are similar to those that will gather at the National Sports Festival.

One must then ponder this situation where, despite the ‘concerns’ raised, national activities and events related to Religion, Politics, Culture, Education, Business did not suffer; yet Sports which is the only entity that provides an amalgamation of all the forementioned entities unfairly suffers due to the same concerns.

Expectedly, sports enthusiasts and dependents are crying out at the selective and marginalized application of these concerns. They are also wondering why the dates were fixed in the first place without final authorization first being secured, this pointedly being the reason for the unfolding confusion and distress.

Most certainly, health should be the priority in deciding to hold or postpone the National Sports Festival – but it is only one side of the health argument that is being put up.

The other side of the health argument is the MENTAL HEALTH & SANCTITY of tens of thousands of youths and officials for whom sports is their anchor; in addition to the FINANCIAL HEALTH of legion of sporting youths from across the 37 states, who have looked to the 2020NSF to salvage some of the financial damage inflicted by the COVID-19 disruption.

This is why the European leagues are back in play because they understand that the damage wrought on people’s mental health accompanied by the financial losses incurred are hugely disproportional, especially when one considers that the spread of covid-19 can be mitigated in a controlled environment.

The depression and anxiety felt by the sports community is real, and the 2020NSF was the defibrillator needed to counteract the sporting arrhythmia currently being experienced by tens of thousands of sporting youths.

If Kenyans were allowed to travel 4760km from Kenya to Nigeria to participate and enjoy the benefits of the recently held Kaduna Marathon, it is only fair to argue that Nigerians be allowed to travel much fewer kilometers to participate and benefit from the Edo 2020 National Sports Festival.

To this effect, all efforts must be made to satisfy whatever conditions are necessary to ensure the 2020 National Sports Festival are safely held, either at these original dates proposed or within the next two months.

Leadership at all levels should properly align for a major decision like this.

Home Nigerian boxer, Ike Ibeabuchi laments from US prison …as family begs Buhari to intervene

By Babalola samuel

from southern times.

Erstwhile  world boxing heavyweight contender, Ikemefuna Ibeabuchi, said some forces are bent on keeping him locked up forever in US prison

The embattled Nigerian boxer abroad, Ike Ibeabuchi also known as ‘The President’, had one of the shortest careers in heavyweight history.

A few months after beating Chris Byrd to submission in March 1999 with a record of 26-0 after five rounds in another KO record, he landed in jail for assaulting a stripper.

Ibeabuchi had fallen for the same trick that knocked out the career of his childhood hero, Mike Tyson.

So far, ‘The President’ has served in six prisons, correctional homes and detention across the US for nearly 20 years. They are, High Desert State Prison Nevada, Ely State Prison Nevada, Lovelock Correctional Centre Nevada, Eloy Detention centre, Washoe County Jail Nevada and Carson City Correctional Michigan.

He has earned three associate’s degrees and certificates in prison. One of them is a paralegal certificate to better understand how the US legal system works. All while behind bars.

While the combination of State of Nevada, US Homeland Security and ICE are bent on keeping Ibeabuchi locked in, he is locked in another battle of survival. He said he is on the verge of losing millions of dollars earned in 20 heavyweights wins from 1994 to 1999.

How his ordeal started

He was staying at The Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas when he phoned a local escort service and had a woman sent to his room. The 21-year-old woman said later she was there to strip and nothing else. She claimed Ibeabuchi attacked her in the walk-in closet after she demanded to be paid up front. Ibeabuchi barricaded himself in the bathroom and police discharged pepper spray under the door until he surrendered.

The Nigerian was alleged to have similarly assaulted another lady eight months earlier at Treasure Island Hotel and Casino.

The WBC champion was labelled “crazy and unstable” in addition to “dangerous” popularised by The Ring magazine and placed under house arrest.

After an excruciating trial that lasted more than two years, he was sentenced to 16 years imprisonment. By 2014, when he served out his term, he made a move to reignite his career, only to be picked up again by US Immigration, Customs and Enforcement (ICE).

After he was released in 2014, US Immigration detained him because he was yet to be issued his green card.

By 2016, when he got his green card and was released, he was again picked up and even the family did not know where they were holding him. At one point, relatives thought he was dead.

Ibeabuchi was unaware of any requirements regarding the first conviction at the time he was released from immigration holding in 2016. According to Arizona, ICE has a detainer on Ibeabuchi issued on 16 February 2018, which may relate to his United States citizenship application status after he was issued a green card in 2016.

Nigeria would not issue Ibeabuchi travel papers in 2015, and Ibeabuchi wound up in immigration limbo. Ibeabuchi was found officially admitted to the Arizona State penal system on 16 February 2018, and found guilty of disorderly conduct on 23 March 2018, considered a major violation in Arizona, but it is unknown whether this is related to his violating the terms of his first conviction.

His new Arizona release date is 25 September 2019, and his supervision will end 5 March 2020. Ibeabuchi, who turns 47 on2 February 2020, remains on lifetime probation in Arizona.

According to Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing correspondent who had followed Ibeabuchi’s judicial problems using his journalism links, it is confirmed that Ibeabuchi is still behind bars and may be released with conditions early 2020.

Family Begs Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari for help

According to his nephew John Uzo, “As soon as we (family) realised he (Ike) is alive and where he was being held, we swung into action to let the whole world know the injustice against our brother and uncle.”

Uzo said his uncle needs the help of the Nigerian government to facilitate his unrestricted release. He strongly believes Ibeabuchi needs help from home – Nigeria.

“We have been calling and still using this opportunity to call on President Muhammadu Buhari to help him,” noted Uzo. “He is a citizen of Nigeria and if there is any time to step into his case it is now.

“Ike is a fighter and from incarceration, he has fought gallantly. I’m appealing to Nigeria to join forces with him now.

“The US media and judiciary have labelled him dangerous and crazy yet he has read, passed and acquired four degrees and certificates under lock and key. They don’t know what they are talking about,” added Uzo, who remains positive Ibeabuchi will one day walk out a free man. – Within Nigeria

Keep shearing this guys.
