Ijebu Heritage Half Marathon has commenced registration for the maiden edition of the half marathon, 10km race and 5km race taking place in Ijebu Ode, Ogun state.

The Half Marathon, organised by Heritage Group and greatly supported by the Ogun state government will hold on 17th July, 2021.

“We are calling on all professional runners, health and fitness enthusiasts and fun runners to register for the Ijebu Heritage Half Marathon, the Ijebu Heritage Half Marathon promises to be a fantastic experience for all participants,” said Mr. Bukola Olopade, the Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, the race consultants.

He added that “We have put all precautions in place to ensure that the half marathon is COVID 19 complaint, this is the reason why we are only allowing 500 runners for the 10KM, 5KM categories while the Half Marathon will have 300 Runners including Elite Runners.

“The Ijebu Heritage Half Marathon will bring spotlight on Ijebu as an international city that has a lifestyle of physical activity and health consciousness. Marathons and road races are a veritable tool for the empowerment of young people in communities, at Nilayo, we are positive that this event will greatly impact the people of Ijebu Ode. 

That is why we are calling on all Ijebu sons and daughters to participate and support the Ijebu Heritage Half Marathon.”

Interested participants can register for the 5KM, 10KM and Half Marathon via the Ijebu Heritage Half Marathon website, ijebuheritagehalfmarathon.com.

Virtual participants can also register for the marathon via the Finerge App available on Appstore and Google Play.

The race will start at School of Health Technology, Ilese Road and Finish at Otunba Dipo Dina International Stadium.

 Ijebu Heritage Half Marathon Get AIMS certification 

The Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) has certified the Ijebu Heritage Half Marathon.

CEO of Nilayo Sports Management, Hon. Bukola Olopade confirmed the AIMS certification even as he noted that the Ijebu Heritage Half marathon will be one of the few races to receive the top grading from AIMS even before the maiden edition. He said, “We at Nilayo are extremely glad to be having the measurement done for the Ijebu Heritage Half marathon. It further goes to show the professionalism which we do our races. This race would have an AIMS certificate right from the beginning before the race commences.” 

Norrie Williamson, World Athletics Routes Marker said the measurement of the routes in Ijebu was not a problem as the Ijebus were very friendly during the exercise. He said, “It was absolutely fantastic and the people are so friendly once they understand what you are trying to do so measurements was not a problem and it’s an interesting route” 

The world-renowned marathons and road races route measurer said runners will enjoy the routes as it will give them a unique Nigeria experience. “The 10KM will be a very fast 10KM and something worth trying, again and again, it gives you the Nigeria experience and what more can you ask for” 

Hon. Olopade expressed appreciation to the Ogun State government for their unflinching support towards the Ijebu Heritage Half marathon race right from its conception. “We thank the Ogun State government through the ministry of sports for also endorsing and supporting this race in so many ways,” he said. 

The Ijebu Heritage Half marathon is scheduled to hold on July 17th, 2021.

 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon holds April 10

The 2021 edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon has been moved from February 13, 2021 to April 10, 2021 according to Project Consultant Bukola Olopade, in a statement released on Monday.

“On behalf of our Host City, Lagos, the Center of Excellence, our Headline Sponsor, Access Bank and other partners and sponsors, we sincerely apologize for having to postpone our race from February 13, 2021 to April 10, 2021 because of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic which has forced the cancellation or postponement of sporting events worldwide especially mass participation events like marathons and road races”.

Olopade revealed that Access Bank Lagos City Marathon organizers and sponsors had put machineries in place to go ahead with the race on February 13, 2021, especially all the Covid-19 protocols set by the World Athletics body and they got the approval of all the government agencies including the Lagos State Safety Commission which approved an elite only race.

The Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare also approved for race for February 13, but on second thought, as responsible corporate citizens, it was agreed that the race should be moved since most organization are on lockdown till end of February and with the prediction that by March, we would be experiencing a downward trend in the number of infections and vaccine would be available.

Organizers of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon were inundated with calls from Athletics Federations around the world and elite runners who wanted to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Lagos since the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon has been approved as Olympic Games qualifier by the International Olympics Committee (IOC) and the World Athletics,

“We thank federations and elite runners worldwide who has chosen our race to qualify for the Olympics in Tokyo. Our new date of April 10 still falls within the IOC deadline. Runners have till May 31, 2021 to qualify for the Olympic Games’’.

On whether the April 10 race will accommodate 10km family and fun runners, Olopade said that decision will be in the hands of the technical and medical personnel working with the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.

“We have seen the benefits of running that Access Bank Lagos City marathon has revived in Lagos and Nigeria, especially the health benefits. The 10km race is for the people and as Project Consultant, I love to see thousands coming for our race but runners’ health is paramount so will leave the decision to technical and health personnel to decide but I will inform them of the desire of the runners who want the 10km race considered” said Olopade.

Kenya Airways becomes Official Airline Partner of Access Bank Lagos City Marathon

 The number of global brands entering into partnership with Access Bank Lagos City Marathon increased on Wednesday as awarding winning airline, Kenya Airways joined the rich list of partners.

With Access Bank as Headline Sponsor, the rich list of partners include 7UP Bottling Company, Eko Atlantic City, Eko Hotels, Revolution Plus Property, Bet9ja, and Skechers. The Center of Excellence, Lagos is the Host City

The deal to bring Kenya Airways on board the award winning Access Bank Lagos City Marathon was brokered by the Project Consultant and Managing Director of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, Bukola Olopade.

The event hosts over 100,000 runners from across the world each year, including top elite runners. Hiwever, due to COVID 19 precautions for road races, only 10,000 runners will be allowed to participate in the next edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.

Japanese Company Suzuki has officially become the Automobile Partner Of the Great Abeokuta 10 KM Marathon and the ValueJet IAU African Championship.

The groundbreaking partnership was sealed between Suzuki and owners of the races, Nilayo Sports Management Limited  today in Lagos at the headquarters of Suzuki by CFAO.

Speaking at the event, Managing Director of Nilayo Sports Management Limited Hon. Bukola Olopade expressed confidence that the partnership will further strengthen a foundation that is already solid.

He said "As for the Abeokuta Marathon, it's a plus for the 10km event, it would definitely add new and obvious touches".

Hon Olopade who is a former commissioner for sports in Ogun State also added that the Remo Ultra Race will take a beautiful shape in 2021, adding that the partnership with Suzuki means more value has been added.

On her part, General manager of Suzuki Aissatou Diouf, Suzuki is proud to associate with a company that has done tremendous things in the last couple of years.

Nilayo Sports Management Limited, organizers of the Abeokuta 10 KM Marathon and the Remo Ultra Race will on Friday, December 11 Unveil Suzuki CFAO as the official automobile partner for the 2021 edition of the Abeokuta Marathon and the Remo Ultra Race.

Managing Director of NSML Bukola Olopade confirmed that the unveiling will come up on Friday at a Press briefing at the Suzuki headquarters in Victoria Island, Lagos starting from 10am

According to a statement, representatives of the automobile company and Nilayo Sports Management Limited will be present at the Press briefing where details about the events will be revealed.

The two events began in 2019 with 21-year-old Kenyan athlete Biwott Kemboi dictating the pace at the Abeokuta 10km race winning the $5,000 prize money after completing the race in 28 minutes and 16 seconds.

In the category for Nigerian winners, Emmanuel Gyang won N1,000,000 first prize in the male category and fourth overall having crossed the finish line in 31 minutes and one second, Fadekemi Olude went home with N1,000,000 first prize in the home athletes female category after completing the race in 37 minutes and 29 seconds.

Mbolekwa Thobile of South Africa won the men version of the Remo Ultra Race, while his compatriot Mbanjwa Sanelisiswe emerged the winner of the female version.

Despite the glamour and the success recorded in the first editions, Nilayo Sports Management Limited has promised to take the second edition to a bigger and better pedestal.

 Plateau state athlete Dalyop wins 2020 Lagos Women Run title

Plateau state athlete, Patience Mwanwang has emerged the winner of the fifth edition of the Lagos Women Run 2020, tagged 'Run Anywhere, Everywhere.'

Dalyop, breasted the tape at 33 minutes 43.73 seconds to win the Elite Open category.

Awawu Haruna finished second place at a time of 34 minutes 02. 24 seconds.

Abiye David finished third place at a time 34 minutes 16.39 seconds.

Dalyop, got a record cash prize of N1,000,000 for the special virtual edition of the Women Run, while second place Awawu Haruna got N500,000. Third place Abiye David got N300,000 for her efforts.

Winners in the Elite Open category were presented their cash prizes by the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Lagos State, Segun Dawodu.

In the Veteran category, Lagos State athlete, Anna Seriki, emerged the winner after crossing the finish line at 45 minutes 47.11 seconds. In second place was Plateau state athlete Ladi Henry, she ran 46 minutes 16.90 seconds. While Kareem Bolanle finished third place at 46 minutes 40.74 seconds.

Seriki, Ladi and Kareem got N300,000, N200,000 and N100,000 respectively.

The presentation of cash prizes to each the Veteran category winners was done by the Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Sola Aiyepeku.

For the 2020 edition of the Lagos Women Run, all the Covid-19 protocols approved by the Lagos Government were followed strictly. 

All the athletes were given two disposable face masks at the start point which was at the Tafawa Balewa Square. The organisers also created cells of six athletes each on a single row, this created the much desired social distance before the race was flagged off.

At the end of the presentation ceremony all the athletes that finished the race were given certificate and medals.

Over 23 elite runners from African countries have arrived Kaduna for this weekend Kaduna marathon.

The athletes male and female  who are from Kenya, Ethiopia Cameroon and other Sub Saharan Africa countries are all excited to be in kaduna.

The Chairman of the technical committee Yusuf Alli confirmed that over 80 Nigeria top runners too have also arrived the centre of learning for the race scheduled for this  Saturday.

The race is divided into three categories 21 kilometres, 10 kilometres and 5kilometres male and female version.

Meanwhile the world Press briefing to herald the event comes up on Friday at 10am.

The Kaduna marathon is fully sponsored by the Kaduna State government to showcase the rich tourism potential of the state and improve fitness of its citizens.

Ahead of the maiden edition of Kaduna Marathon scheduled for Saturday, 21st November 2020, the Kaduna State Government has urged to citizens participate in the race and to support the runners and officials involved. 

The government has also announced that in order to stage a successful and safe race, some roads in Kaduna metropolis will be closed on Saturday, from 6am to 3pm. 

A statement from the Steering Committee of the Kaduna Marathon said that the government and the race organisers regret the inconvenience that the temporary closure of roads may cause to residents.

Commissioner of Sports, Professor Kabir Mato disclosed that the about 30 roads within the state capital will be fully or partially closed between 6am and 3pm on Saturday. 

He explained that the security agencies who will be implementing the road closures expect the cooperation and voluntary compliance of residents.

Prof. Mato added that sponsors of Kaduna Marathon and the elite athletes participating in the event will be unveiled tomorrow at the final pre-event press briefing. 

He disclosed that Kaduna Marathon will be broadcast live in accordance with international standards. 

The commissioner commended registered runners who have collected their race kits for their orderly conduct at the KASU collection venue, and he urged those who are yet to collect their kits to do so.

The Organising Committee of the Lagos Women Run has announced the shift in date of the 2020 edition of the only women run in Africa by one week.

According to the General Coordinator of the Lagos Women Run, Tayo Popoola, the Run has now been rescheduled from November 14 to November 21, 2020.


She noted Thursday in Lagos at the Run Secretariat inside the Teslim Balogun Stadium, that the shift in date by one week was neccessitated by the desire of the organising committee to allow the over 15,000 registered runners across the world to get familiar with the running App, which will be the guide of the  run as they compete in the Virtual Run, which is coming to this part of the world for the very first time in Nigeria and indeed Africa.

"We decided to shift the date of the 2020 Lagos Women Run by one week, so as to give our registered runners more time to get accostomed to the App which would guide them on how best to compete effectively.

"We found out that, towards the close of the registration deadline, we had thousands of runners rushed in to register. And as responsible organizers, it behoves on us to give more time for our runners to learn how to use the competition App."

Popoola, also disclosed that, the 2020 Lagos Women Run Expo will hold on November 14, at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, from 10a.m. "The Expo will provide some of our runners who may not get their running kits through the designated delivery arrangements on the official Lagos Women Run website,  to physically collect their running kits.

"The Expo will also provide the opportunity to hold seminars on healthy running for women and other techniques in planning for a 10 kilometres run.

"The Expo would give all the Run partners and sponsors the opportunity to showcase their products. Aside from all these, there will also be free medical screening for women against some health challenges."

The virtual runners will use the Running App anywhere in the world, while the Real run will be completed  by elite runners who will run at designated historic route  adherence to the Covid-19 protocols.
