"How I Became Captain Of Naija Ratels FC" - Paulina Ali

Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship side Naija Ratels Captain Paulina Ali has shown real character as the leader of the team ever since she was made captain over two years ago.

The charismatic defender recently revealed how she started the round leather game as a kid and how her parents never supported her in the beginning.

The young player believes that she has grown as a leader and player in Naija Ratels and owes the club alot of responsibilities, reasons why she never left the club, despite receiving offers from some of the biggest teams in the NWFL Premiership.

"For me, Football is the only thing that makes me happy. Football is life and am glad I can do what I love doing here at Naija Ratels.

"I started out with volleyball and was very good at it, until one of my teachers at Padopads Secondary School, Makurdi convinced me to start playing soccer, probably because of my height. I fell in love with the game afterwards and never looked back.

"Just like many young women footballers, my parents never supported me playing football. My mum was always against it and punish me at times. But I was determined and wanted to achieve something great with the game and that pushed me to be where I am today, even though I know i still have a long way to go.

"I must confess that I have improved tremendously, both as a person and a player under Naija Ratels and we all have special love for the club and President, Barrister Paul Edeh, who stands as a father figure to all of us.

"We owe the club and the President alot and that's why we are so dedicated and determined to always win all our games.

On being Captain of a Championship team at a very young age, Paulina said it has been tasking, but yet rewarding.

"Being a leader means you have to be always ready to lay down good examples. It has been tasking, but yet very rewarding. It has made me grow positively as a person and see life in a different perspective. It also makes me work harder on the pitch, because I always want to win games and excel in everything I do and this is the same mentality I pass on to every member of the team."

"I have told the girls that they need to do something extra- ordinary when the Championship season starts. We know our aim and our ability as dedicated and hardworking players will always stand out and work for us. We are focused and only aiming at setting a great record." She concluded.

Naija Ratels will be playing in the NWFL Championship season later this year and will be aiming at gaining promotion to the elite league at their first trial.

"We Won't Be Cajoled To End The League Abruptly" - Club Owners Fire Warning To NWFL

"We Won't Be Cajoled To End The League Abruptly" - Club Owners Fire Warning To NWFL

While the dust is gradually settling on the sudden change in the format of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) from straight format to abridged version, with the top six clubs on the log proceeding to the Super Six playoff, club owners have come with another twist to the whole drama by rejecting the idea to end the regular season after matchday 13.

In a 360 degree turn, the club owners who had earlier voted, in a virtual meeting with the league board for the super six and relegation play offs have rejected the decision and rather want the league to continue with match day 14 games.

This stems from the virtual meeting held by the club owners and managers on Friday, running through Saturday afternoon.

In the communique released by the club owners after the meeting, they want the season to continue with with the initial straight format and resume with Matchday 14 matches instead of going ahead with the Super Six and Survival Play-Offs.

They also proposed finalists at the last NWFL season should represent Nigeria in the CAF Women's Champions League zonal qualifiers, thus putting to rest the need to end the abruptly.

According to the club owners, since the league didn't end due to the need to meet up with next season's continental commitment, it was logical to hand the tickets to those who reached the final of the last NWFL women's play off in 2019.

It will be recalled that Rivers Angels pipped Confluence Queens 1-0 at the 2019 playoffs final in Lagos.

The owners also elected to have no relegation of teams, rather proposed for the restoration of the league to its original 16-team format of which two promoted teams will complete the number if no teams are relegated.

This is due to the fact that Heartland Queens and Adamawa Queens were expelled by the NWFL due to non compliance with club licensing.

According to feelers from the meeting, only three clubs disagreed with decision of the Club Owners.

The NWFL Super Six is scheduled to hold in Ijebu Ode starting from the 19th of April, 2021 of which the winner will be crowned the league champions and qualify automatically for the CAF Women's Champions League while the runner up will proceed to the WAFU Zonal qualifiers scheduled for May.

Bayelsa Queens, Delta Queens, Rivers Angels, Edo Queens, FC Robo Queens and Sunshine Queens have qualified for the Super Six.

Naija Ratels Players Visit Benue IDP Camp, Donates Menstrual Hygiene Kits, Relief Materials And Others

Naija Ratels Players Visit Benue IDP Camp, Donates Menstrual Hygiene Kits, Relief Materials And Others.

Players of Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship side, Naija Ratels FC on Friday donated Menstrual hygiene kits, relief materials and football kits to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at the Abagena Camp in Benue State.

The players, technical crew and staff of the NWFL Championship team carried out the visit to the IDPs as part of it's charity outreach activities and were all seen in a happy mood as they interacted with the Internally Displaced Persons.

Menstrual hygiene is one of the neglected health and hygiene issues surrounding the rights of vulnerable girls and women in camps built for internally displaced Persons (IDPs) and for hundreds of these women and girls living in the IDP camps, this natural monthly occurrence could be very disruptive.

For these reasons, the players of the Nigeria Women Football League side, Naija Ratels deemed it fit to donate relief materials and sanitary pads to the under privileged females in the internally displaced People's Camp.

Donating the items, Team Manager of the side, Iorsue Kuhwa and Captain, Paulina Ali said the reason behind the gesture was to support young girls in the camp who cannot afford to buy pad for their monthly period.

According to them, it was observed that young girls and women in IDP Camps resort to the use of pieces of cloths or tissues for their monthly periods.

"We learnt how young girls and women in this IDPs Camp go through alot during their monthly periods and how some girls stay away from school going into isolation when they menstruating because of stigmatisation by their male peers''; Paulina Ali said.

Also reacting, the team manager said; "So as a team, we thought and decided we could help out in our own little way, so today we donated about 15 Cartons of Sanitary Pads, four bags of rice and some kits for the girls and women here.

"I believe it's high time we teach young girls and women in IDP Camps about Menstrual health and hygiene. This awareness will create more confidence amongst these girls and there will be no shame when experiencing their Menstrual period, which is natural for every woman." He concluded.

The assistant Camp Commandant, Solomon Azulo expressed appreciation for the gesture on behalf of the girls and women in the camp.

"It is a great honour to receive these menstrual hygiene kits and other relief materials on behalf of the young girls in the camp.

"This is a great gesture and am sure Naija Ratels did this just because they care about the Girl-Child.

"We are grateful and hope other teams, groups and bodies will always remember us here." He concluded.

Naija Ratels is an NWFL Championship team based in Abuja and owned by renowned Philanthropist, Barrister Paul Edeh.

Thunder Balogun' Legacy Continues With Granddaughter Who Plays For NWFL Side, Naija Ratels.

Meet Yetunde', Naija Ratels Gifted Striker Hoping To Follow In Grandfather's 'Thunder Balogun' Illustrious Footsteps

Meet Thunder Balogun's Gifted Granddaughter Yetunde' Who Plays As A Striker For NWFL Side, Naija Ratels.

Naija Ratels forward Yetunde' Balogun' is the Granddaughter of legendary Nigerian player Teslim Olawale Balogun', who was Africa's first qualified professional coach and was captain of the National team.

He was nicknamed "Thunder" because of his powerful shot and was also known as "Balinga" for a similar reason, some of these qualities his granddaughter also possesses.

At just 15 years old, Yetunde' Balogun' is already regarded as a great prospect and one who is termed to be prominent in years to come.

The Naija Ratels striker has shown that she has similar abilities to her grandfather who was known as one of the deadliest strikers the country has ever had, producing a great performance against Rivers Angels, crowning it up with a superb goal in Porthacourt.

"Obviously, I didn't get to meet my grandpa when he was alive because I wasn't born yet. He died in 1972 and my dad was also very young when he passed on.

"But of course, i heard a lot of stories about him. He's also one of my biggest motivation and another reason why I chose to play football." Yetunde' told www.thenwfl.com

"All i can say about my grandpa, is that he was a very good footballer and people saw his potential and that was why they named him 'thunder' because of his powerful shot on his left leg.

"He played and coached in some countries but most especially in England where he played for Queens Park Rangers and Peterborough. My dad told me alot about him and I am indeed very proud of his achievement." She stated.

"My dad gives me all the supports needed and he believes so much in my abilities.

The gifted striker also revealed how four time African Footballer of the year and Barcelona star inspired her to dump music for football.

"I was going through some videos on youtube, and i came across Asisat Oshoala video, i clicked on it to  see how she plays and all that, i was stunned and amazed the way she played in the video.

"I was so inspired, i went straight to search about her who she is and where she's coming from everything about her got me motivated then, that was how I knew I wanted to play football and i could be just like her someday.

Tesilimi Olawale Ayinde "Teslim" Balogun was a Nigerian football player and coach. Balogun played at both professional and international levels as a striker, before becoming Africa's first qualified professional football coach.

Fakunle, Agams, Aderemi Lead In NWFL Premiership Team Of Week 5

Fakunle, Agams, Aderemi Lead In NWFL Premiership Team Of Week 5

The NWFL Premiership resumed last Wednesday with a series of entertaining clashes across the country, with a hugely anticipated South-south derby between Delta Queens and Bayelsa Queens ending 1-0 in favour of the Okowa Ladies.

Elsewhere, Sunshine Queens defeated Abia Angels in Umuahia, whilst Confluence Queens beat FC Robo Queens.

It's that time of the week again where we compile our best XI from the mid-week's action. Here is thenwfl.com team of week 5.

Nelly Ekeh (Goalkeeper, Sunshine Queens)

Torned between Ekeh Nelly of Sunshine Queens and Ibubuleye Whyte of Rivers Angels, both keepers handled the occasion well and we're exceptional. However Ekeh got an edge and deserved to be the goalkeeper for week 5.

Sunshine Queens got a win in Umuahia against Abia Angels and the Flamingoes goalkeeper was one of the reasons the 'Betty Babes' secured all three points.

Jumoke Alani (Right Full-back, Edo Queens).

A modern day right full-back, Alani was all round, intercepting play from the Nasarawa Amazons attackers. She completed a lot of passes and was quick to attack and defend from the flank.

Uzoamaka Igwe (Left Full-back, Bayelsa Queens)

Despite her side losing in this encounter, Chiamaka was superb and saved her side a couple of times. This is her second time making the team of the week.

Mary Aderemi (Defensive Midfield, Osun Babes)

The former Sunshine Queens Midfielder produced a fine performance as the Omoluabi Queens engine room, providing a display of typical energy and dynamism.

She set the tempo for her team with her pressing play as they largely dominate the midfield battle against a very busy determined Dreamstar Ladies.

Happiness Titus (Centre-back, Confluence Queens)

The Confluence Queens player was solid defensively and gave an impressive outing against FC Robo Queens, marshalling her side's defence in absence of Alexandria Florence, who fell ill over the week.

She was always there to protect her side from conceding and thus deserves a place in the best eleven for week 5.

Ugo Njoku (Centre-back, Rivers Angels).

The Super Falcons defender had a solid game and was a major boost for Rivers Angels as they got a victory against Ibom Angels in Uyo.

The big defender partnered well with Amaechi Ojini to earn their side a perfect win.

Peace Abbey (Right Wing, Delta Queens)

Peace Abbey was called upon and did fantastically well against Bayelsa Queens. She was visibly seen all around the place and helped the 'Okowa Ladies' secure a hard-fought victory over Bayelsa Queens.

Maryann Ezeanagu (Left-wing, Rivers Angels)

The former Delta Queens winger individual effort was superb, she manoeuvred past a succession of Ibom Angels players, capping a strong showing.

Agams Nkechi (Forward, Confluence Queens).

Two goals in her last two matches means that the former Osun Babes forward has become a peripheral figure for 'The New Direction' under Whyte Ogbonda this season. Her performance is surely pushing her case for more regular involvement in Ogbonda's side.

Chiamaka Okwuchukwu (Midfield, Royal Queens)

Royal Queens have proven they have the firepower to trouble any side in the league and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu hs shown what she can do week in week out. She was outstanding in Calabar and scored the equaliser for her side to level.

Seun Fakunle (Forward, Sunshine Queens)

She has been a key figure for her side this season, scoring some important goals and the latest was the lone goal in Umuahia against Abia Angels. She worked hard all through the game and engaged her self in most of the attacks, which finally earned her a goal.

Barr. Edeh Offers Scholarship To Over 40 Players, Says Football Can Help Tackle Gender-Based Violence

Bar. Edeh Offers Scholarship To Over 40 Players, Says Football Can Help Tackle Gender-Based Violence

Football as a sport is an important tool to bring people together and also educate boys about true masculinity, violence prevention and the rights of women. That's why NWFL Championship side, Naija Ratels Football Club took out time to play a novelty match against a team assembled by it's President, Barrister Paul Edeh on the 6th of February 2021 at the Area 3 Football pitch, Abuja.

A minute of silence was held before the start of the match in memory of victims of Gender-based violence across the world.

The game which featured some notable individuals was filled with fun and excitement, as both teams united to end violence against women. The Naija Ratels Ladies scored first through Adanna Nwachukwu  before Kenny Jubril equalised late on for the Barrister Paul Edeh side to make it 1-1.

"Sports is a vital tool for building peace and understanding across nations and can also be a powerful instrument to oppose violence against the girl child, helping promote gender equality and also children's right", said Naija Ratels President, Barrister Paul Edeh.

"I passionately believe in the power of sport. The values that I have as a man, leader, husband and father must be used to help women who are being abused and to focus our attention on preventing abuse from happening by educating boys about true masculinity, violence prevention and rights of women.

The United Nations SDG Peace Ambassador further stated that he will be offering scholarships to all his players to the University level, noting that those who failed WAEC and NECO will retake it, while UTME forms will be brought for those with required credits.

"We live in a society where too much attention has been taken away from the girl child. We live in a society where the girl child appears to be abandoned and neglected. We live in a society where the emphasis on the social vices associated with what we do against the girl child isn't highlighted.

"So today, I came together with my friends to be able to highlight a very topical theme which has to do with Gender based violence, we have come here to say no to gender-based violence, that the girl child need to be given opportunity to express themselves in a society that belongs to them as well.

"When we forayed into the game of football, investing in the game of football, we decided we aren't going to do it business as usual, we knew the education of these children was very key, hence we decided to give all of them scholarships and help them realise their dreams, also we diversified into farming and other business to keep funding these girls who have left their homes to come play for Naija Ratels. Their welfare is well catered for and that's very important for us." He concluded.

A lawyer and human rights activist, Barrister Nicholas Elechi lauded the initiative and tasked the Federal Government, NFF and other notable Stakeholders to give more support to Bar. Paul Edeh in the project.

"We are marking an end to violence against women in the society with this event. It's amazing what Barrister Paul Edeh is doing. A single individual doing what so many Nigerians cannot do. He has given scholarships to over forty girls which will enable them to get the best of education. It's really amazing

"He is a very good example of what it means to be a great Nigerian. Wilson Churchill once said: ' If every Englishman can defend his family, the whole of England will be defended."

"I  urge the Nigerian Government, NFF and other key stakeholders to support him in this course. I am really impressed."

Also, Ex-International and Chairman of Kogi United and Confluence Queens, Abdul Sule, who was one of the participants, thanked the convener, Barrister Paul Edeh for giving support and recognition to the girlchild, noting that he will always be available for anything that has to do with Gender-based violence.
