 REGISTRATION OPENS FOR IJEBU HERITAGE HALF MARATHON



Ijebu Heritage Half Marathon has commenced registration for the maiden edition of the half marathon, 10km race and 5km race taking place in Ijebu Ode, Ogun state.


The Half Marathon, organised by Heritage Group and greatly supported by the Ogun state government will hold on 17th July, 2021.


“We are calling on all professional runners, health and fitness enthusiasts and fun runners to register for the Ijebu Heritage Half Marathon, the Ijebu Heritage Half Marathon promises to be a fantastic experience for all participants,” said Mr. Bukola Olopade, the Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, the race consultants.


He added that “We have put all precautions in place to ensure that the half marathon is COVID 19 complaint, this is the reason why we are only allowing 500 runners for the 10KM, 5KM categories while the Half Marathon will have 300 Runners including Elite Runners.


“The Ijebu Heritage Half Marathon will bring spotlight on Ijebu as an international city that has a lifestyle of physical activity and health consciousness. Marathons and road races are a veritable tool for the empowerment of young people in communities, at Nilayo, we are positive that this event will greatly impact the people of Ijebu Ode. 


That is why we are calling on all Ijebu sons and daughters to participate and support the Ijebu Heritage Half Marathon.”


Interested participants can register for the 5KM, 10KM and Half Marathon via the Ijebu Heritage Half Marathon website, ijebuheritagehalfmarathon.com.


Virtual participants can also register for the marathon via the Finerge App available on Appstore and Google Play.


The race will start at School of Health Technology, Ilese Road and Finish at Otunba Dipo Dina International Stadium.

 Ijebu Heritage Half Marathon Get AIMS certification 



The Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) has certified the Ijebu Heritage Half Marathon.


CEO of Nilayo Sports Management, Hon. Bukola Olopade confirmed the AIMS certification even as he noted that the Ijebu Heritage Half marathon will be one of the few races to receive the top grading from AIMS even before the maiden edition. He said, “We at Nilayo are extremely glad to be having the measurement done for the Ijebu Heritage Half marathon. It further goes to show the professionalism which we do our races. This race would have an AIMS certificate right from the beginning before the race commences.” 



Norrie Williamson, World Athletics Routes Marker said the measurement of the routes in Ijebu was not a problem as the Ijebus were very friendly during the exercise. He said, “It was absolutely fantastic and the people are so friendly once they understand what you are trying to do so measurements was not a problem and it’s an interesting route” 


The world-renowned marathons and road races route measurer said runners will enjoy the routes as it will give them a unique Nigeria experience. “The 10KM will be a very fast 10KM and something worth trying, again and again, it gives you the Nigeria experience and what more can you ask for” 



Hon. Olopade expressed appreciation to the Ogun State government for their unflinching support towards the Ijebu Heritage Half marathon race right from its conception. “We thank the Ogun State government through the ministry of sports for also endorsing and supporting this race in so many ways,” he said. 



The Ijebu Heritage Half marathon is scheduled to hold on July 17th, 2021.

February 16th 2021 – Nilayo Sports Management Limited, Nigeria’s foremost Sports agency 
has announced a partnership deal with Rite Foods Limited and Aron Nigeria Limited on the 
Great Abeokuta 10KM Race, Ijebu International Half Marathon and The Kings Cup Golf 
Tournament.

These three events are billed to hold in Ogun state in November, July and August 
respectively.

Mr. Bukola Olopade, the Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports while making the 
announcement said “we are excited to have Rite Foods and Aron Nigeria Limited on board, 
the first edition of the Great Abeokuta 10KM Race opened a new chapter in the history of 
marathon races in Nigeria. This second edition will continue to blaze the trail.

“We are proud to introduce the maiden edition of the Ijebu International Half Marathon and 
the second edition of the The Kings Cup Golf Tournament, the Golf tournament is held in 
honour of the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo III and Agura of Gbagura
and Oba Saburee Babajide Isola Bakre annually.

“Having Rite Foods and Aron on these two events proves both companies’ dedication to the 
development of sports in Nigeria. This partnership commitment will explore enormous

He added that this is not the first time Nilayo Sports is partnering with Rite Foods and “the 
company is glad to have Rite Foods on board once again, delivering value across all our 
events for our partners is our watchword” added Mr. Olopade.

Great Abeokuta 10KM Race is scheduled for 13th November 2021, the Ijebu International 
Half Marathon will hold on 10th July 2021 and The King’s Cup Golf Tournament will be held 
on 7th August 2021.

The 2021 edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon has been moved from February 13, 2021 to April 10, 2021 according to Project Consultant Bukola Olopade, in a statement released on Monday.


“On behalf of our Host City, Lagos, the Center of Excellence, our Headline Sponsor, Access Bank and other partners and sponsors, we sincerely apologize for having to postpone our race from February 13, 2021 to April 10, 2021 because of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic which has forced the cancellation or postponement of sporting events worldwide especially mass participation events like marathons and road races”.



Olopade revealed that Access Bank Lagos City Marathon organizers and sponsors had put machineries in place to go ahead with the race on February 13, 2021, especially all the Covid-19 protocols set by the World Athletics body and they got the approval of all the government agencies including the Lagos State Safety Commission which approved an elite only race.


The Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare also approved for race for February 13, but on second thought, as responsible corporate citizens, it was agreed that the race should be moved since most organization are on lockdown till end of February and with the prediction that by March, we would be experiencing a downward trend in the number of infections and vaccine would be available.



Organizers of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon were inundated with calls from Athletics Federations around the world and elite runners who wanted to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Lagos since the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon has been approved as Olympic Games qualifier by the International Olympics Committee (IOC) and the World Athletics,


“We thank federations and elite runners worldwide who has chosen our race to qualify for the Olympics in Tokyo. Our new date of April 10 still falls within the IOC deadline. Runners have till May 31, 2021 to qualify for the Olympic Games’’.


On whether the April 10 race will accommodate 10km family and fun runners, Olopade said that decision will be in the hands of the technical and medical personnel working with the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.



“We have seen the benefits of running that Access Bank Lagos City marathon has revived in Lagos and Nigeria, especially the health benefits. The 10km race is for the people and as Project Consultant, I love to see thousands coming for our race but runners’ health is paramount so will leave the decision to technical and health personnel to decide but I will inform them of the desire of the runners who want the 10km race considered” said Olopade.

Nigeria’s foremost marathons and road races running company, Nilayo Sports Management Limited, has set October 2, 2021 date for the maiden Abuja City International Marathon with a telecommunication company and financial institution set to be the headline sponsor and main partner.  

Bukola Olopade, the Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports told our correspondent over the weekend that

 “The Abuja City International Marathon is a race that excites us because given our precedence with the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon and all our other races across the country, the Abuja City International Marathon promises to be a world class event. We have concluded discussions with a telecom giant and a financial institution. Very soon we shall invite the media to the unveiling of our sponsor and partner”.

Olopade who revived the culture of marathons and road races in Nigeria after 31 years in 2016 with the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon revealed that the route of the Abuja City International Marathon has been measured and calibrated by World Athletics grade ‘A’ measurer Norrie Williamson since 2018.

Williamson who was the measurer of the marathon routes of four Olympic Games, Atlanta’96, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, and Beijing 2008 and several other iconic cities marathons, described the point to point route of Abuja City International Marathon as one of the best he has measured around the world. 

 Olopade described Abuja as an amazing city with a lot of exciting sights, “this is the reason why we are particular about making the race an international marathon that will attract the cream-de-la-crème of road running across the world.

“We are working on this project with the World Athletics, Athletics Federation of Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development, we are set to put Abuja on the world map.”

Apart from reviving the culture of marathon and road races in Nigeria with Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, the upcoming Abuja City International Marathon that will put the federal capital among the top marathon destinations in the world. Nilayo’s Midas touch in marathons and road races was behind the highly successful races like the just concluded Kaduna Marathon, Great Abeokuta 10KM Race, Valuejet IAU African Championships Remo, Ijebu International Half Marathon among other sporting events across the country

Organizers of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon have said that the 2021 edition of the event will still maintain Its quality despite the reduction in number of runners and individuals involved due to the Covid-19 pandemic.


Hon. Bukola Olopade, Managing Director of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, NSML, Right owners of the event in an interview confirmed that the reduction in the numbers of personel is an attestation that everyone involved in staging the silver label event is paying priority attention to the world trend as regards the Covid-19 pandemic.



Honourable Olopade added that the modus operandi of the Lagos City Marathon for this year will be in line with what is applicable to other events around the world.


He said “Although with a reduced number of athletes, the excitement might decrease but our burning passion would see us deliver a massive marathon race in February, we are taking note of what is happening everywhere in the world and come February 13, we will put in place measures that will stand us out as we have always done".



The 2021 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon where three hundred athletes will be on the road for the prize money will also serve as qualifiers for the olympic games.



The race will be broadcast live on Television and multi media channels to ensure people are not on the street to cheer the runners.



All runners, workforce, auxillary workers, security and others will get a booklet of dos and don'ts of the race, from the office of the race's general manager, baring in mind the novel coronavirus
